A big practice test before I paint Jupiter for a teacher I owe something to.

I took a canvas and painted it black, let it dry then used black and white gesso to paint in some general shapes.

Painting planets is very simple and easy to do, if you can paint a circle you can paint a planet.

I really like how the planets came out. Not so much on the 'cloud' nebula or the comet tail but overall I am happy with my test results.

How did you make the stars? I used to use a tooth brush and sort of splatter it, but it comes out clumpy sometimes.

I used a new toothbrush and mixed a tiny bit of phthalo blue into my liquid quite- the liquid white is a lot thinner than the oil paints I use so it splatter really nicely. It also work better if you don't have much paint on the brush to begin with, flicking off some of the excess works quite well before you go to the canvas.

The nebula are straight up clouds, make the same way. I scrubbed in some blue oil paint on top of the black then used a clean brush with white paint over the blue parts to make the clouds.
